Cons: The weather
Sandhill House Country House Retreat is a quiet and luxurious destination in Gunnislake, east Cornwall. Around 6 miles from the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, Sandhill House offers en suite rooms with free parking and Wi-Fi, and landscaped gardens with water features.
Each room has en suite bathroom facilities with shower or bath and complementary toiletries. There is a TV with DVD player, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities in all guest rooms.
Breakfast is served in the Georgian dining room, using ethically and locally sourced produce. The local area has a number of recommended pubs and restaurants, including The Queen’s Head in the village just a 10-minute walk away.
Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Tamar Valley offers many beautiful locations for walking, cycling and horse-riding. The scenic Tamar Valley Line railway runs from Plymouth to Gunnislake, and you can stop off at several pretty villages along its 14 miles route.
Sandhill House is the perfect countryside retreat to escape to and enjoy select bed and breakfast accommodation in the heart of the breathtaking Tamar Valley. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site, this select B&B Cornwall is the ideal gateway to explore the 'hidden' Tamar Valley's fantastic natural environment and world changing heritage, Dartmoor National Park, Bodmin Moor and historic Naval city of Plymouth. In addition Sir Francis Drake's hometown, Tavistock, is less 10 minutes drive and both the rugged north and sandy south coasts being just 30-40 minutes away. It is also ideal for exploring several National Trust properties, or for business if you prefer to avoid the big hotel chains. Historic Sandhill House and the self-catering Tamar Orchard Barn are exclusive but relaxed retreats. The elegant and enchanting Grade II Listed Georgian home was originally the great mine owner, John Williams', 'Manor'. Recently restored to it's former glory with facilities including king size beds, beautifully appointed en-suites, free wifi, and Freeview TV/DVD and hospitality trays. There is a breakfast menu choice, offering the best ethically sourced produce, served in the Georgian dining room. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept dogs in the house because of our own, who are not on 'general release'. The self-catering Tamar Orchard Barn, set in the 2 acre gardens, offering total seclusion with a private, south facing garden. Please ring 07713 077877 to enquire. With public transport, including the scenicTamar Valley Railway Line, at the end of the carriage drive, Sandhill House is the perfect place for walkers and cyclists on the National Cycle Route . Other local activities include tree-surfing and canoeing on the beautiful Tamar River. Guests are welcome to relax in the tranquil, horticultural ‘treasure trove’ gardens. We regret extensive ornamental ponds make Sandhill unsuitable for children.
The best way to describe our home is that it is enchanted, with our blog is called Once Upon a Time for a good reason. We arrived to an uncut diamond which is now a shining diamond. With each room have its own character which echoes the long history of this key 'Manor' in the Tamar Valley.
Approached down the woodland carriage drive the grandeur of Sandhill House unfolds before you. The Tamar Orchard Barn is set in the 2 acre landscaped gardens. It is very peaceful but the location offers excellent access to public transport including rail and bus services. There is a local shop and petrol station and at least one pub is within 15 minutes walking distance. Tavistock is just 10 minutes drive and Gunnislake has a post office. There are several pubs serving good food.

Pros: Mary was a wonderful host - as was Fudge the dog! The breakfast was delicious each morning and both Mary and her husband were so helpful in suggesting things to do, how to get there etc
Cons: Nothing other than how hard it can be to get a taxi - no fault of theirs, just worth knowing in advance :)

Pros: My wife and I loved our stay at The Sandhill House. Mary and Andrew were wonderful hosts, the building is charming and the setting is bucolic. The Inn was full of character and was a soothing blend of old world antiques and modern amenities. Mary was a treasure trove of information, and she made great suggestions regarding the sights to see and the pubs where we might dine. We were fortunate to be there at the time that there was a special Sir Francis Drake exhibit at the National Trust's Buckland Abbey. Breakfast was served by Mary one morning and Andrew the next and both were beyond delicious. We stayed at Sandhill House in the fall when most of the gardens were past their peak, yet they were lovely nonetheless. There is character galore in this B&B, and it is situated in a uniquely picturesque part of the the UK. We wholeheartedly recommend The Sandhill House Country Retreat to any traveler to Cornwall.
