I moved from Cornwall to Cromarty three and a half years ago with my husband Ken and black Labrador Charlie. We had been on holiday to Cromarty numerous times and fell in love with the place. Having toyed with the idea of opening our property up to the bed and breakfast business for a while we have finally made the decision to give it a go.
The little town of Cromarty lies at the eastern tip of the Black Isle (which is neither black nor an isle!) about 25 miles north of Inverness but just far enough away to have retained its character and heritage. Sitting on the sheltered shores of the Cromarty Firth, the town offers a perfect get-away with scenic walks, dolphin-spotting, exploring the history and regular cultural events. The town is a conservation area with examples of eighteenth and nineteenth century merchants’ houses juxtaposed with the pretty cottages and lanes of the old Fishertown. There are two museums, a mediaeval church, interesting little shops and several eateries, so enough to keep a visitor occupied and relaxed for the duration of their stay. Situated only 15 miles from the A9, the main route north, it does, however, offer an ideal base for exploring the rest of the peaceful Black Isle or to head further afield to the scenically diverse North Highlands.
