Balcraggie Annex is a wing of Balcraggie House, a former Church of Scoltland manse which dates back to the early 19th Century. The annex has been recently renovated to a high standard by the owners and contains a bedroom, livingroom, kitchen and shower-room with underfloor hearing throught and all modern amenities. It is situated in Glenelg, in Wester Ross, and overlooks the Isle of Skye. We are one mile from the centre of village of Glenelg (local shop, cafe and pub), one mile from the sea and two miles from the local ferry which takes cars and passengers on a short, (but beautiful and dramatic) crossing to the Skye in the summer months. The area is a paradise for walking, cycling, hill climbing, visiting unique antiquities such as the Glenelg Brochs. Balcraggie House sits in its own grounds, which you are welcome to explore, and a walled garden where we grow organic vegetables, which are available to guests, as are the eggs from our chickens. Part of the garden is private for the use of guests, and we have outside seating and a barbecue.
We have lived in the area for 40 years and can help you to find well known and less well known places of interest. We have bikes which you are welcome to borrow.
Glenelg has several ancient monuments, the famous Glenelg Brochs (2000 years old) and a ruined Hanoverian Barracks from the 18th century. It is the closest point to the Ilse of Skye on the Scottish Mainland and the community owns the local ferry which plies back and fore over the narrow and dramatic crossing. Sea Eagles, seals, and dolphins can all be spotted regularly here. The area is surrounded by mountains and remote glens which are all worth exploring and we are a short drive away from visitor attractions on Skye and the mainland such as Eilean Donan Castle.
